Overview

The Certificate in Spanish-English Translation and Interpretation, offered by the Department of Spanish and Portuguese in the College of Liberal Arts, is a twelve-credit specialized certificate program designed for students interested in translation and interpretation careers or those seeking to enhance their bilingual abilities in various professional settings, including health-care, legal professions, business, social services, international relations, science and technology. Students will gain proficiency in oral and written Spanish communication, reading comprehension, and translation and interpretation techniques through interactive classes focused on specialized vocabulary and Latinx cultural contexts. They will also develop competencies in cultural sensitivity, ethical considerations, and the context-specific language subtleties that are essential for accurate and respectful communication.

Students pursuing the certificate in Spanish-English Translation and Interpretation can also participate in study abroad opportunities in Latin America and Spain, internships in various industries (government, non-profit, corporate, education), career development workshops and departmental events. The certificate will help prepare students to meet the rising demand for translators and interpreters in professional settings. They will be poised to advance their careers and have access to greater job opportunities. Speaking more than one language can set students apart in today's global job market. It can increase their marketability and opportunities for career advancement and promotion. Bilingual professionals can communicate with a larger population and help increase an employer's competitive edge. According to the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages, acquisition of a second language may help improve standardized test scores, and it may improve memory and problem-solving skills.

As the number of Spanish speakers in the United States continues to climb, the knowledge of language and culture that students will acquire while learning translation and interpretation will provide them with a unique set of skills to efficiently and compassionately work with the Hispanic and Latinx community in the United States and abroad.

The certificate curriculum requires twelve credits or four Spanish courses, including one advanced language class, two translation and interpretation courses, and one culture class from which there are many options available based on students' personal and professional interests.

Certificates are awarded only at the time of completion of the bachelor's degree and cannot be awarded either as a stand-alone program of study or after completion of the first bachelor's degree.
