Overview
University College offers a 10-15 credit interdisciplinary Certificate in Outdoor Wellness and Leadership. This undergraduate certificate provides an opportunity for students to further their knowledge, skills and experience in outdoor education, which is a growing industry. Beyond careers related to the outdoor industry, students will develop skills and proficiency in conflict resolution, problem-solving, communication and cultural competence through various experiential learning environments.
Students will select from an existing array of courses in various disciplines. See Requirements for a list of approved courses. Courses for this certificate may be offered at Main Campus, Ambler Campus or online.
This certificate is offered to both undergraduate degree and non-degree seeking students. Degree-seeking students who are interested in this certificate should discuss with their home college advisor how the courses in the certificate will fit into their overall degree plan. Students are strongly encouraged to meet with a University College (UC) advisor to declare the certificate early in their academic career.

Certificate Requirements
- The undergraduate Certificate in Outdoor Wellness and Leadership requires a minimum of five (5) courses and a minimum of ten (10) credit hours.
- The courses will be selected as follows:
- One course (2-3 credits) from the Leadership Theory category;
- One course (2-3 credits) from the Risk Management and Ethics category;
- Two courses (3-6 credits) in Applied/Experiential coursework;
- The final course taken will be the Outdoor Wellness and Leadership capstone (UC 3187). Courses in the categories above must be successfully completed prior to taking UC 3187.
- General Education courses (courses numbered 08xx and 09xx) may be included in the array of courses, but can constitute no more than one of the five courses toward the certificate. A maximum of one General Education course from our approved list can satisfy both the General Education and certificate requirements.
- At least three courses required for the certificate must be completed at Temple.
- A grade of C- or better in each course and a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 is required to earn the certificate.
Approved Courses
The three categories of coursework within the Outdoor Wellness and Leadership Certificate are Leadership Theory, Risk Management and Ethics, and Applied/Experiential. Each category has a list of courses in various disciplines that satisfy the requirements for that area. (See course list below.) Please note that some courses may be offered only once a year.
