Global Education at Temple
Global education takes many forms at Temple: learning languages; spending a summer, semester or year studying abroad; building an international concentration into a major; or enrolling in special programs such as the Latin American Studies Semester. Students are encouraged to consult their school/college and course descriptions for further information on global and language studies.

Study abroad is one of the most rewarding and beneficial experiences available to Temple students. Temple's transformative global learning experiences provide a firsthand understanding of cultures and languages, enabling students to better understand and contextualize world issues and develop as engaged global citizens, collective problem-solvers and leaders in their chosen fields.
Temple students have almost limitless options when it comes to studying abroad. Students may spend a semester, academic year or summer participating on one of Temple's numerous programs abroad or may choose to participate in an accredited, approved external study abroad program.
Education Abroad offers programming, advising and resources to help students choose the best program for their goals and needs. Visit the Education Abroad web site for an overview of the planning process.
Study Abroad and Academic Planning
Education Abroad and academic advising units help students integrate study abroad into their degree. Study abroad offerings vary by program and may include courses that fulfill major, minor, and/or General Education requirements, as well as electives. Education Abroad's school/college guides are a resource for students planning to complete major requirements abroad.
Study abroad participants are often eligible for a General Education World Society (GG) waiver; students considering study abroad are therefore advised to refrain from fulfilling the General Education World Society requirement prior to studying abroad.
Financing Study Abroad
Students receiving financial aid can usually apply most, if not all, sources of aid to study abroad tuition and fees. Temple offers scholarships for semester, academic year, and summer study abroad for qualified students and advises students for external scholarships.
Visit the financial aid, scholarship and financing study abroad sections of Education Abroad's web site for more information.
Temple's Passport Scholarship
Temple provides a scholarship for the cost of a passport to all first-year and first-year transfer students who intend to study abroad and are applying for a passport for the first time. Learn about the passport scholarship and application.

TUJ offers a broad range of English-taught courses in a variety of disciplines, including General Education, as well as Japanese language and literature courses. Many study abroad students also participate in credit-bearing internships coordinated by TUJ's Career Development Office.
To enhance students' understanding of Japanese culture, TUJ organizes several optional field trips and excursions, including half-day excursions as well as day and overnight excursions to various locations throughout Japan.
Visit the Education Abroad web site for details about the study abroad programs at TUJ.
In addition to study abroad, through the Temple Japan Entry Year (TJEY) program, incoming first-year students may study at the Kyoto campus for one year and then continue their education at Temple University in Philadelphia. Interested students select this option when applying to Temple University.
Temple University Rome
Emilia Zankina, Dean of Temple Rome and Vice Provost for Global Engagement
Temple University Rome, founded in 1966, is one of the oldest and largest study abroad programs in Italy. Students from Temple and U.S. universities may study abroad at Temple Rome for an academic year, semester and/or summer.
At Temple Rome, students enroll in courses designed to take advantage of the city's rich resources. Temple Rome offers a broad range of academic options, including English-taught major, elective and General Education courses, as well as Italian language courses. Semester students who have not studied Italian previously must enroll in an elementary Italian language course. Study abroad students often participate in credit-bearing internships coordinated by Temple Rome.
An extensive field study program complements the traditional classroom and studio curricula. Classes make regular trips to museums, architectural sites, and other points of interest in Rome, and many courses include excursions outside of Rome. Temple Rome arranges optional programming and volunteer opportunities to further introduce students to life in Rome.
Visit the Education Abroad web site for more details about the study abroad program at Temple Rome.
In addition to study abroad, through the Temple Rome Entry Year (TREY) program, incoming first-year students may study at the Rome campus for one year and then continue their education at Temple University in Philadelphia or Japan. Interested students select this option when applying to Temple University.
Temple University in Spain
Dr. Jamie Durán, Program Director
The Temple in Spain program is based at the University of Oviedo in the northern province of Asturias. Students from Temple and other U.S. universities may study abroad at Temple Spain for a semester and/or summer.
Removed from the heavy tourism of some other Spanish towns, Oviedo, the capital of Asturias, is rich in Spanish history and culture and offers easy access to nearby cities, the mountains and the coast. This off-the-beaten-path location provides students with a unique opportunity to experience northern Spain.
Temple in Spain offers a wide range of Spanish language, literature and culture courses, as well as English-taught courses in a variety of disciplines including business, computer science, economics, and engineering. A Spanish language immersion option, which includes accommodations with a Spanish host family, provides an opportunity to focus intensively on language learning.
Visit the Education Abroad web site for details about Temple in Spain programs.
Exchange Programs
Temple students may study for a semester or academic year in countries around the world, including Australia, England, France, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong, New Zealand, South Korea, Spain and Taiwan on Temple's university-wide exchange programs. Through established partnerships, Temple students study at an overseas university while paying Temple tuition, and "in exchange," give a student from the same university an opportunity to study at Temple. In most cases, exchange students take classes with students from the host country and have opportunities to get involved in campus clubs, organizations, and activities.
Given the immersive nature of exchanges and the challenge of adapting to what is often a different, more autonomous educational structure, exchanges are most appropriate for an independent, highly motivated student with a strong academic history. Through the course evaluation process, Exchange Program participants earn transfer credit for approved courses and can apply those credits towards the fulfillment of their degree requirements, including major, minor, elective and most general education requirements.
Visit the Education Abroad web site for detailed information about Exchange Programs.
Faculty-led Summer Programs Abroad
Each year, several Temple faculty members direct summer programs abroad for academic credit. The programs generally last four to eight weeks and admit students from Temple as well as other U.S. universities. In recent years, Temple has offered faculty-led summer programs in Costa Rica, the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Ghana, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Spain, and the UK.
Visit the Education Abroad web site for detailed information about Faculty-led Summer programs.
External Programs
Students can also choose from a variety of academic year, semester, and summer programs offered by Temple's Approved External Program partners. External Programs are study abroad programs administered by other colleges and universities, or by study abroad organizations. External Programs offer opportunities that expand upon many existing programs already offered through Temple. Through the course evaluation process, External Program participants earn transfer credit for approved courses and can apply those credits towards the fulfillment of their degree requirements, including major, minor, elective and most general education requirements.

Short Term & Break Faculty-Led Programs
Recognizing that not everyone can dedicate an entire semester to studying away, Klein Global Opportunities has created a variety of courses that incorporate an immersive short-term travel experience. Typically, programs incorporate in-person classes on main campus, then students travel as a group to a new location for hands-on learning. A sampling of opportunities includes the following:
The Art of Visual Storytelling in Puerto Rico: Over 7 weeks on campus followed by a week immersion in Puerto Rico over spring break, students will explore the Puerto Rican community of visual storytelling and the artists telling those stories. Examine the various channels through which these artists navigate. Investigate, experience and create content that examines both Philadelphia and Puerto Rico's vibrant art communities.
Sports Media in London: Sports Media, Management and Culture in the Global Marketplace: During Fall 7B term, this professional development focused program offers a comprehensive understanding of the 'Culture of Sport' on an international scale, with a specific focus on the impact within England and Europe, contrasting with the U.S. Class starts on main campus and culminates with a week-long trip to London over Fall break that will deepen students' understanding of global sports culture and provide valuable opportunities for networking and career exploration in the sports media industry.
Life + Work in Music City: Navigating the Entertainment Industry in Nashville, TN: This spring course will introduce students to the essential structures and business models of the music industry as a whole during the first half of the term. Then students will be immersed in the civic and industry cultures of Music City by spending Spring Break in Nashville, visiting cultural sites, industry organizations, and entertainment venues; and meeting with local industry professionals to discuss career paths, opportunities and competition in the region, the state of the industry, and more.
Communication and Cultures of the American Southwest in New Mexico: This course delves into the unique communication of American Southwest cultures, with a focus on indigenous nations, oral histories, art, and photo storytelling. Students examine historical and modern colonialism, as well as how groups counter racism and colonial influences. Students are taught photo storytelling, oral documentary methods, while emphasizing environmental stewardship and ecotherapy's role in human well-being. Our destination is New Mexico's northern region, including Albuquerque, Santa Fe, and an extended stay at Ghost Ranch—an expansive retreat blending science, art, spirituality, and nature. This seven-day Spring Break trip includes a seven-week pre-departure course, encouraging students to introspect their global stance, promoting cross-cultural sensitivity and competence.
New programs are introduced regularly. For more details and to apply for programs, visit the Klein College Global Opportunities Portal.
Global Opportunities Scholarships
Each semester, Klein College Global Opportunities encourages all students to apply for one or more of the scholarships available to students who participate in its programs. They include, but are not limited to, the following: Global Opportunities Scholarship—for financial need; Multimedia Portfolio Scholarship—for students to create social media content for Klein GO during their program; Global Access Scholarship—for those whose identities are under-represented in study away; and First Time Away Scholarship—for students who have never traveled outside of the U.S. before (eligible for international locations only).
When completing your Klein College Global Opportunities General Scholarship Application, students are required to supply essays, short responses, or pitches for each scholarship they wish to apply for. These scholarships are only applicable for those students who enroll in Klein GO programs.
