Art

The Department of Art at the Tyler School of Art and Architecture brings together a community of bold makers and thinkers with the highest aspirations for creative and social achievement, technical skill and individual expression. Students gain access to unique opportunities to immerse in artistic traditions and collaborate across disciplines, as well as combine media and processes in innovative and personal ways.

Within Tyler's state-of-the-art facilities, the Department of Art offers students a breadth of experiences and mentorship from a diverse and accomplished faculty of practicing artists that covers centuries of practice to modern experimentations with technique. Students will grind pigment into oil and manufacture paint, dig clay to make ceramics and explore the latest computer-assisted modeling, rapid prototyping, even Augmented and Virtual Realities.

Majoring in any of the programs within the Department of Art sets students on a path to mastery of the media and processes of that discipline. We also welcome current Temple students who wish to seek electives in studio art or even a minor in Art.

Each student moves from a common foundation curriculum that introduces materials and processes and prepares them for success in a range of fields of study. Those who select Art as their major will work side-by-side with majors in Visual Studies, Art Education and Art Therapy. The dynamic exchange of ideas that result from these interdisciplinary conversations spur intellectual risk and drive research-based creative concepts.

Upon graduation, students have the practical skill sets and honed aesthetic for successful careers in studio art, art education and design, as well as attend top-tier graduate programs.
