The Obstetrics and Gynecology clerkship is a 5-week course that provides students with the opportunity to learn the basic knowledge and skills specific to OB/GYN. Students rotate through the obstetric, gynecologic, and ambulatory care settings. During the rotation, students continue to hone history taking and physical exam skills that are essential for any specialty, as well those specific to OB/GYN. Students are exposed to the presentation, work-up and medical and/or surgical management of common OB/GYN disorders.

This non-clinical elective will provide medical students with an overview of Family Planning as a subspecialty of Obstetrics and Gynecology, with a particular focus on elective pregnancy termination. Students will participate in an online curriculum that will cover the epidemiology, political, and cultural barriers, as well as inequities of abortion. Students will develop a firm understanding of how to approach counseling patients with unintended pregnancy, the abortion methods used in the first and second trimesters, and how to manage basic complications.

OBGY M805. Maternal Fetal Medicine. 0 Credit Hours.

In this clinical elective, students will participate in the evaluation and management of high-risk pregnancies complicated by maternal disease (i.e., diabetes, hypertension, collagen vascular disease, and endocrine disorders). The student will attend a high-risk clinic weekly and be involved in the antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum management of patients with high-risk pregnancies. The student will also spend time in the Fetal Center assisting with the performance of advanced fetal ultrasound non-invasive and invasive fetal testing.

OBGY M807. Gynecologic Oncology. 0 Credit Hours.

In this clinical elective, students are assigned inpatients to follow and report on during morning rounds. There will be emphasis on early diagnosis, evaluation, and treatment of gynecologic cancers. The student will gain experience in the multi-modality approach to gynecologic malignancies, including radical surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy. The student will participate as an assistant in surgery. The rotation includes daily rounds with the attending and resident staff, with review of histopathology, cytology, and diagnostic studies. Participation in the colposcopy/tumor clinic, gynecologic tumor board and Hospital Tumor Board will supplement the student's experience.

OBGY M815. Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility. 0 Credit Hours.

In this clinical elective, students will have the opportunity to participate in all aspects of the infertility work-up. They will be exposed to a variety of patient visits and procedures, such as ultrasonography, saline sonos, and hysterosalpingograms. Students will apply their growing knowledge base to help manage treatment plans, which may include ovulation induction cycles.

OBGY M820. Urogynecology and Pelvic Reconstructive Surgery. 0 Credit Hours.

In this clinical elective, students will learn how to evaluate and treat patients with pelvic organ prolapse, urinary incontinence, and pelvic floor dysfunction. Students will participate in all aspects of patient care, from initial history and physical to differential diagnosis, work-up, and treatment, which may be medical or surgical. Students will divide their time between multiple offices and operating rooms.

OBGY M895. OB/GYN Subinternship. 0 Credit Hours.

The required Sub-Internship (Sub-I) core course will provide students with the opportunity to perform the clinical duties of an ob/gyn intern with direct supervision. Student will take primary responsibility for assigned patients, will prioritize and complete tasks in a logical and efficient order, will apply evidence-based medicine (EBM) principles in the diagnosis and management of patient care all under direct supervision. Students will assist in relevant procedures for their assigned patients, under the direct supervision of resident, fellow, or attending.
