It is well established that as the US population ages and live with an increasing number of chronic diseases, access to primary care will become increasingly critical. Despite the steady (and growing) demand, a relatively small percentage of students here at Temple choose to pursue primary care specialties following graduation. We have heard from our students that a variety of factors influence their decision; however, early and consistent access to primary care faculty, mentorship support in career planning and visibility of the wide range of options available within the spectrum of primary care are all areas we can easily address today.

FAMP M300. Career Exploration of Sports Medicine. 0 Credit Hours.

This elective will allow students to gain exposure to the specialty and the types of health conditions experienced by patients seen by providers in this specialty as healthcare team members.

FAMP M360. Family Medicine. 0 Credit Hours.

The Family Medicine clerkship is a 4-week rotation during which students are exposed to the depth and breadth of medical disorders seen in the practice of Family Medicine in the outpatient setting. Students are actively engaged in the evaluation and management of patients of all ages and in providing ongoing acute, chronic, and preventive care in the context of the patient-centered medical home (PCMH). Students learn the value of continuity in the patient-physician relationship and explore the patient's perspective of health and wellness and the impact of social determinants of health.

This Family Medicine clinical elective provides students with clinical experience caring for uninsured underserved population. Students will learn first hand about social determinants of health and how they affect patient care. They will also experience how community-based involvement can help make a difference in improving the health of individual patients as well as the entire community.

During this Family Medicine clinical elective, students will gain experience in the field of sports medicine, including exposure to the disciplines of primary care sports medicine, orthopedic sports medicine, sports physical therapy, and athletic training. There will be opportunities for participation in the treatment of sports injuries and illnesses in venues such as Outpatient Sports Medicine Clinics with both Orthopedic Sports Medicine and Primary Care Sports Medicine Physicians, Outpatient Orthopedic Sports Medicine Surgical Procedures, and Sports Physical Therapy Rehabilitation.

FAMP M440. Advanced Family Medicine. 0 Credit Hours.

This course offers students an opportunity for exposure to the practice of Family Medicine beyond their Phase 2 clerkship. Students will participate in outpatient and/or inpatient care of routine and complex Family Medicine patients.

FAMP M441. Advanced Family Medicine. 0 Credit Hours.

This clinical elective will provide students with the opportunity to perform primary care in the outpatient setting with direct supervision. It is an elective for students who have identified an interest in Family Medicine and/or Primary Care. It allows for students to enhance the foundational outpatient skills developed during their third-year Family Medicine clerkship. Students are actively engaged in the evaluation and management of patients of all ages in the outpatient setting by providing acute, chronic, and preventive care. Students will learn to care for patients with a biopsychosocial approach and take into account social determinants of health in the management of patients.

FAMP M879. Family Medicine Subinternship. 0 Credit Hours.

The required Sub-Internship (Sub-I) core course will provide students with the opportunity to perform the clinical duties of a Family Medicine intern with direct supervision. Students will take primary responsibility for assigned patients, will prioritize and complete tasks in a logical and efficient order, and will apply evidence-based medicine (EBM) principles in the diagnosis and management of patient care, all under direct supervision. Students will assist in relevant procedures for their assigned patients, under the direct supervision of resident, fellow, or attending.
