This generic first and second year Surgery elective serves as an introduction to a special topic in the Department of Surgery. Topics vary from semester to semester and may include an extension of a content area already covered in the required curriculum, an introduction to a new topic or research issue, or exposure to a clinical discipline. First and second year electives are optional and do not impact graduation requirements. Electives are schedule for seven two-hour sessions each, for a total of fourteen contact hours. Student interest and faculty availability determine topics offered each semester.

The Surgery clerkship is a 6-week rotation during which students are exposed to a broad range of common surgical disease entities and clinical scenarios. Students are assigned to two different surgery services during the rotation to give students exposure to a broad range of surgical patients. Students learn the work-up, diagnosis, and treatment of patients with common surgical diseases. Subspecialty services that students rotate on include Acute Care Surgery, Colorectal, Burns, Minimally Invasive and Bariatrics, Surgical Oncology, Trauma, Thoracic, Plastics, Vascular, Cardiothoracic, and Abdominal Organ Transplant.

Advance OMS: This clinical elective is the most advanced level course for our students who will provide patient care and responsibilities similar to a sub-internship. Students participate as assistants or first assist in more advanced surgical procedures.

This clinical elective is for students enrolled in the OMS/MD program. OMS 1, 2, and Advanced courses are designed for a longitudinal progression in educational experiences for the specialty of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. These electives are open to all MD students. Although some dental background is helpful, it does not take away from the ubiquitous nature of the educational experiences. OMS 1: Focused experiences on patient evaluation, treatment planning, documentation of surgical procedures, and brief presentations of teaching points from selected OMS cases. Students take part in level appropriate direct patient contact and minor surgical experiences, e.g., level appropriate tooth extraction or I&D.

Although some dental background is helpful, it does not take away from the ubiquitous nature of the educational experiences. OMS 2: Gradual increase in the level of appropriate patient care responsibilities, e.g., independent patient evaluation and discussion with the attending surgeon. Participate, as an assistant, in more advanced surgical procedures and perform level-appropriate selected components of the surgery under the supervision of the attending surgeon, e.g., multi-layer wound closure.

This advanced OMS elective is intended to expand on the basic surgical knowledge and clinical skills toward the advanced subspecialty of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery training with exposure to the Pediatric setting. It helps the learner enhance their knowledge base and develop clinical decision-making, critical thinking, and clinical skills needed for a contemporary Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon.

This a 4th year elective rotation for students interested in an excellent community general surgery experience. Students will work closely with affiliated surgical faculty, as there are no residents present. The rotation will focus heavily on core general surgery, with additional exposure to both trauma care and colorectal surgery. Students will have the ability to work in both the inpatient and outpatient settings.

SURG M751. Surgery Night Coverage/Consultation. 0 Credit Hours.
This elective will provide an opportunity for 4th year students interested in surgical careers the opportunity to experience night time surgical patient care. Many surgical residencies have a night-float system to remain within work hour limits, and this course will prepare our students to comfortably operate in these systems. Focus will be on performing effective patient care hand-offs and transitions, learning to triage and manage phone calls while covering multiple surgical services, and providing general surgical consultative services as appropriate. Students will mostly operate at the sub-intern level caring for patients on the hospital floors. Students may participate in operative surgical procedures as able, and provide ED and floor consultative services when possible.

SURG M752. Colorectal Surgery. 0 Credit Hours.
This clinical elective introduces the student to the practice of colorectal surgery. The student will be involved in the workup and surgical treatment of patients with presentations that vary from acute abdomen to gastrointestinal cancer. The student will also have exposure to management of common gastrointestinal surgical problems such as bowel obstruction, gallstones, acid-peptic disease, and anorectal complaints. Students will work in the office and in the operating room. In addition, students will be given the opportunity to participate in the evaluation of patients, formulate a differential diagnosis and treatment plan, and discuss plans with the patient and care team.

SURG M766. Reconstructive Plastic Surgery Oncology. 0 Credit Hours.
In this clinical elective, students will be provided the opportunity to focus on reconstructive surgeries after cancer. They will learn and participate in the full spectrum of reconstructive options, ranging from skin grafts to the most complex techniques using free tissue transfer. With the FCCC plastic surgeons, the student will work collaboratively with the medical team to restore normal structure and function after treatment for cancers such as breast, head and neck, and sarcomas.

Students will work closely with Dr. Guy and the Cardiovascular Surgery team with integral involvement in all aspects of patient care. Students will be expected to contribute to pre-operative evaluation, operative procedures, and post-operative management. Special emphasis will be placed on selective criteria and management of patients for robotic procedures vs. conventional procedures. Dedicated time with robotic simulation equipment will allow the student to advance technical skills. A presentation on a topic of interest to the student will be expected upon completion of the course.

This clinical elective is a full hands-on immersion into an active Abdominal Organ Transplant program. The student will become an integral member of the transplant team. The student will participate and will be exposed to emotional experiences for patients, from consenting to have a loved one become an organ donor to the excitement and relief of having a life-saving operation. The student will gain valuable experience in understanding how a multi-disciplinary specialty functions and will also appreciate the intricacies of how society, government, and healthcare interact. From a clinical perspective, the student will actively participate in the care of very ill patients and see extremes of physiology in action.

In this clinical elective, students will be able to participate in the evaluation, treatment, and care of thoracic surgical patients and learn the appropriate management for lung, airway, esophageal, foregut, mediastinal, and chest wall conditions. They will observe and participate in robotic thoracic surgery, bronchoscopy, esophagogastroscopy, and open procedures. Students may spend time in the operating room, ICU, TSU, and outpatient clinics.

SURG M780. Plastic Surgery. 0 Credit Hours.
This clinical elective provides students the opportunity to apply the principles of wound healing and tissue transfer in reconstructive surgery. This rotation will also train the student in various facets of plastic and reconstructive surgery, especially complex wound management, and may include hand injury and various hand disorders, microscopic tissue transfers, myocutaneous flaps, treatment of craniofacial trauma, and gender affirmation procedures. This course will expose the student to pre-op, intra-op, and post-op management of plastic surgical patients seen in both the office and inpatient settings. This course may also offer opportunities to expose the students to microscopic free tissue transfer, craniofacial trauma, and gender affirmation procedures.

This clinical elective provides students an opportunity to participate in the evaluation, treatment, and care of cardiac surgical patients and learn the indications for coronary artery bypass surgery, valve replacement, cardiac transplantation, and robotic-assisted surgery. They will familiarize themselves with pacemakers, heart-lung machines, intra-aortic balloon pumps, and robotics. Students will spend time in the operating room, ICU, floor, and outpatient clinics.

The required Sub-Internship (Sub-I) core course will provide students with the opportunity to perform the clinical duties of a surgical intern with direct supervision. Students will take primary responsibility for assigned patients, will prioritize and complete tasks in a logical and efficient order, and will apply evidence-based medicine (EBM) principles in the diagnosis and management of patients, all under direct supervision. Students will assist in relevant procedures for their assigned patients, under the direct supervision of resident, fellow, or attending.

SURG M982. Minimally Invasive Surgery. 0 Credit Hours.
This clinical elective provides students with an opportunity to participate in the Minimally Invasive and Bariatric Surgery clinical program. Students will see and provide multidisciplinary care for a high volume of patients seeking surgical treatment for their morbid obesity. Our multidisciplinary team includes surgeons, physician-extenders, dietitians, psychologists, nurses, and others, providing care to patients in the same outpatient setting. Students will also provide care to a spectrum of patients requiring emergent and elective general surgery. Surgical procedures will be primarily focused on minimal access surgical techniques, including laparoscopic and robotic surgery. In support of the educational focus, we utilize multiple venues (outpatient clinic, operating room, and inpatient surgical units) to help students hone their skills in all areas of surgical practice.
