MUSC 1764. Popular Music and Social Change in the United States. 3 Credit Hours.

Popular music has become a defining feature of modern cultural existence. Not only do people listen (how could we avoid it if we even wanted to?) but we also engage in heated debates about controversies in this music. Why are people angry about Miley Cyrus and Iggy Azalea's performances of black musical styles? Is Kanye West a compelling presidential candidate? Why was the first Billboard topping hip hop album by a white group? How has country music become so important to patriotism and why does it focus on white performers? Why do artists like Beyoncé and Lady Gaga draw heated debates from both feminists and also sexists? In this course we will explore what these conversations reveal about our values and the social, economic, and technological forces shaping our lives. We will engage with songs; we'll read selections from journalism, artists' autobiographies, and scholarship; you'll observe a concert of your choice and interview a listener of your choice; and you will craft a playlist about a social issue that's important to you. In the process, you'll learn ways to approach these materials critically and engage with the tension between listener expectations of authenticity from our favorite musicians and the music industry's desire to make as much money as possible. The materials span several genres of music listened to in the United States in the last 100 years. No musical experience is required. The course will include short writing and creative assignments, a midterm, and a final exam.

A practical study in the musical language and percussive traditions of Afro-Cuban and Latin American music. Students will engage in group performance and improvisation and will hone ensemble and presentation skills. The Owlchestra is a string orchestra comprised of Temple University students (majors and non-majors) and members of the Greater Philadelphia Community. No audition is required for membership. The ensemble meets one evening per week, totaling two hours of rehearsal, and performs a concert at the end of each semester. Members may elect to participate for Temple University academic credit or pay a nominal fee to join as a community member (course credit is not transcripted in the latter choice). Advanced work in the application of performance techniques to specific scenes from the American Musical Theater provides further development for the student of musical theater. Vocal and acting skills are combined with the development of character in musical play scene-work including both song and dialogue. Students spend the semester in collaboration with fellow students on notable and challenging scenes from the musical theater.

Topics will be relevant to teaching singing. The history of singers, singing styles, teachers, and teaching styles will be discussed. The basic science of singing, anatomy, health and basic acoustical models will be covered. There will be an exploration of methods of studio teaching and the application of these methods to private students. Graduate students in choral conducting will apply concepts and knowledge toward preparing choral rehearsals and preparing teaching materials for an undergraduate voice class.

This class is a study of the international phonetic alphabet (IPA) and its application to the singing and coaching of classical voice in the English language. Presentation of IPA symbols and sounds will be accompanied by workbook exercises that will aid the student in gaining fluency using this alphabet. In addition, an ability to read a great deal of IPA in the German, French, and Italian languages will be possible as a result of this introduction to the IPA. Lectures, activities, and assignments are formulated to help each student gain a sound understanding and application of the IPA. Students will apply their knowledge of the IPA to song, either through singing or speaking the text. Students will also play for the in-class performances of the voice majors in the class.

MUSC 8453. Italian Diction for Pianists. 1 Credit Hour.

Italian Diction for Pianists will cover the fundamental technical tools necessary to pronounce and coach Italian with clarity, accuracy, ease, and expression. Students will learn to speak and/or sing Italian correctly using the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA). We will use the text "A Handbook of Diction for Singers" by David Adams. In the first half of the course we will follow the text's order of study for Italian diction. With classroom discussion, exercises and drills we will develop and enhance skills that will improve the understanding and execution of sung Italian. The class work will focus initially on the text but will range over broader issues of diction skills. We will also introduce and extensively apply the International Phonetic Alphabet. During the second half of the course, the students will apply their technical knowledge in performances (either spoken or sung) of songs and arias in Italian in which they will be coached and graded. Students will also play for the in-class performances of the voice majors in the class.

A series of six one-semester independent studies to be taken by international graduate piano students, both master's and doctoral level, who received the major share of their training outside of the United States. Lessons familiarize them with: 1. American pedagogical method books; 2. American technical approaches; 3. American teaching materials for children; 4. American teaching materials for adults; 5. contemporary American keyboard literature; 6. how American competitions and job interviews are conducted. 7. how American pianists engage different pedagogical situations in various settings beyond the university which include teaching, conducting, and accompanying both individuals and groups. In addition to researching the above subjects through reading assignments, students are required to teach the piano actively outside the university and to write a paper at the end of the course summarizing differences between American methods and materials and those of their native lands.

This course will survey the development and repertory of wind-band music from European Antiquity through the present day. Course topics will include the examination and analysis of the development of instruments, cornerstone pieces in each period, performance practice considerations, commissioning projects, current state of wind-band performance opportunities, varied styles of concert programming, audio identification, and developing strategies to determine quality repertory for the medium.

This class traces the use and development of small wind/brass chamber ensembles from the Middle Ages to the present. Consort types to be studied include the medieval waits; renaissance stadtpfeiffers; baroque oboe bands; classical harmonie, especially the Vienna Octet; 19th- and 20th-century woodwind and brass ensembles, especially quintets; and works for combinations of winds and brass. Emphasis is placed on their literature and listening to repertoire.

A practical study in the musical language and percussive traditions of Afro-Cuban and Latin American music. The goal is to equip the learner with greater knowledge, understanding, and practical performance skills with regard to percussion instruments of the Afro-Cuban musical traditions. Students will engage in group performance and improvisation and will hone ensemble and presentation skills.
