Using a historical framework, this course will survey various styles of music found in the United States. Folk, fine art, and popular music examples will be examined on the basis of their intrinsic qualities, as well as in connection with their social, economic, and political milieu. Issues of racism in American society's musical life will be an ongoing theme. NOTE: (1) No prior musical experience or course work is necessary. (2) This course can be used to satisfy the university Core American Culture (AC) requirement. Although it may be usable towards graduation as a major requirement or university elective, it cannot be used to satisfy any of the university GenEd requirements.
